The District Police Chief (Kollam City) has suspended a Senior Civil Police Officer (SCPO) following a sexual assault allegation involving a female colleague.
The move follows a preliminary probe that found that his behaviour violated the force’s professional standards. The suspension order was issued to SCPO M. Navas, who was working on deputation at the Neendakara Coastal Police Station from Alappuzha at the time of the incident.
The alleged assault took place in the early hours of November 6 and as per the complaint, the woman CPO was molested and verbally abused by Navas. Since the incident occurred on the station premises, it had sparked grave concerns about the breach of workplace safety and professional ethics.
The Chavara police had started investigating the incident based on the statement of the CPO and a case was registered under Sections 74 and 75 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for outraging the modesty of a woman and sexual harassment.
The suspension order issued by District Police Chief Kiran Narayanan observed that the involvement of a member of the force as an accused in such a case constitutes a grave breach of discipline and gross misconduct, tarnishing the reputation and dignity of the police department.
