The police have found no signs of homicide in the death of a newborn baby whose body was found in a waste bucket in the washroom of a private hospital at Akampadam near Nilambur on Tuesday (July 28, 2026).
The preliminary post-mortem examination conducted at Government Medical College Hospital, Manjeri, indicated that the death was not caused by a criminal act. The police said the exact cause of death would be known only after receiving the pathology report from a laboratory in Kozhikode.
Doctors have suggested that the death may have occurred due to breathing difficulties during delivery or injuries sustained when the baby fell during birth.
The newborn’s body was found in a waste disposal bucket in a toilet at a private hospital at Akampadam on Tuesday morning. A 28-year-old woman from Chaliyar, who is currently undergoing treatment at the Government District Hospital at Nilambur under police observation, is being investigated in connection with the incident.
The police said the woman had reached the hospital around Monday (July 27, 2026) midnight with her husband and relatives following bleeding. She had not informed the hospital staff about her pregnancy.
As the hospital did not have a gynaecologist, she was advised to seek treatment elsewhere. She later entered the toilet with the pretext of changing clothes, where she delivered the baby. A sanitation worker found the newborn’s body the next morning.
