Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (December 10, 2025) chaired a meeting to finalise key appointments in the Central Information Commission (CIC). It was attended by the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Though there is no official word on what transpired, Mr. Gandhi is said to have given a dissent note on some of the names suggested by the government.

The meeting lasted for more than one and a half hours as the panel had to finalise key appointments in the CIC. Apart from choosing the next Chief Information Commissioner, eight Information Commissioners also have to be appointed.

The panel is also said to have discussed names for the vacant posts of Vigilance Commissioners in the Central Vigilance Commission.

The selection panel meeting comes in the midst of the Lok Sabha debate on electoral reforms, during which Mr. Gandhi had raised questions about the appointment process of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners.

“I sit in that room. It is a so-called democratic decision. On one side, there is Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. On the other side, the Leader of the Opposition. I have no voice in that room. What they decide is what happens,” Mr. Gandhi said on Tuesday (December 9) about appointing the CEC.
