Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comments calling Kolkata’s premium education institute Jadavpur University a hotbed of anarchy have sparked a massive political row amid the Assembly polls. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was quick to defend the university and its students and called it a “democracy in motion.”

During a poll campaign on Friday (April 24, 2026), in the Jadavpur Assembly constituency, Mr. Modi said that once JU was respected globally and was established on a foundation of “nationalism”.
