In a move aimed at restoring livelihoods of Kolam tribal people in Adilabad district, the Green India Challenge (GIC), a nationwide environmental movement, has launched a pilot bamboo plantation project in Mullagutta 2 village in Adilabad rural mandal.
The move also intends to combat environmental degradation while empowering Kolam tribes, a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG). It seeks to address the acute bamboo shortage faced by the Kolam tribes due to restricted access to natural bamboo resources in the forests.
As part of the pilot project, a bamboo plantation has been taken up on five acres of land donated by a local philanthropist, Tekam Rao Ji Patel, in the village, a press release said.
The pilot bamboo plantation project led by former member of Rajya Sabha and founder of GIC, Santosh Joginapalli envisages restoring the traditional livelihoods of Kolam Adivasis by ensuring a sustainable bamboo supply and training for tribal artisans in advanced bamboo craftsmanship.
