Pilgrimage travel is emerging as one of the fastest-growing segments in India’s travel and tourism industry, according to MakeMyTrip’s Pilgrimage Travel Trends 2024-25.

Based on accommodation bookings and pilgrimage holiday packages sold on the MakeMyTrip platform in 2024-25, the report shows that bookings across 56 pilgrimage destinations grew 19% in the last financial year. While 34 destinations recorded double-digit growth, 15 destinations reported growth of more than 25%.

Rajesh Magow, co-founder and group CEO of MakeMyTrip, said, “We are seeing steady growth, fuelled by stronger connectivity and Indians across all age groups and income segments planning pilgrimage-led trips.”

The company noted that pilgrimage travel, similar to leisure travel, continues to be booked very close to the date of departure, with more than 63% of bookings made within six days of travel.

Most trips were short and purpose-driven: 53% of travellers opted for single-night visits, while two-night stays accounted for 31% of trips. Group bookings form a substantial share, with 47% of trips being made in groups.

While a majority of bookings (71%) were for rooms priced below ₹4,500 per night, premiumisation showed momentum with a 24% rise. Alternative accommodation, such as homestays and apartments, also gained traction, contributing nearly 10% of room night bookings in pilgrimage destinations.
