Joint Transport Commissioner A. Mohan on Sunday (January 4) said wearing a helmet is not a burden but a responsibility that everyone must recognise.

Special inspections were conducted against motorists not wearing helmets near a fuel station close to the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium on Bandar Road on Sunday. Addressing people there, Mr. Mohan said a helmet works like a protective weapon that reduces the severity of accidents and saves lives.

Referring to a special month-long helmet-awareness programme organised by the Transport Department for the safety of motorists, where those riding without helmets are educated on the need to use the protective gear, he urged all two-wheeler riders to compulsorily wear helmets.

Mr. Mohan said that every year, hundreds of people lose their lives in road accidents after riding without helmets. A small act of negligence can disrupt not only the life of the rider but also the lives of their family members, he said.

He said motorists without helmets would not be allowed on the roads. Cases would be registered and driving licenses cancelled for violating traffic norms, he added.
