Mandya Deputy Commissioner Kumar on Tuesday said that penalties will be imposed on those who fail to cooperate in controlling dengue.

Speaking at a district-level meeting organised by the district administration, Zilla Panchayat, and the Department of Health and Family Welfare in Mandya, Dr. Kumar instructed officials to carry out inspections of residential and commercial premises, school and college campuses, hotel premises, construction sites, and vacant plots.

Notices will be issued to property owners to take appropriate action if stagnant water from where dengue-causing mosquitoes breed is found. Those who fail to comply with within a stipulated period of time will attract penalties ranging from ₹800 in urban areas and ₹400 in rural areas for houses, ₹2,000 in urban areas and ₹1,000 in rural areas for commercial establishments and offices, and ₹4,000 in urban areas and ₹2,000 in rural areas for construction sites, he said.

An additional 50% penalty will be levied a day if the fine is not paid on time, the Deputy Commissioner said.

Dr. Kumar said that the district has recorded 103 dengue and 11 chikungunya cases so far, with migrant workers being particularly vulnerable. About 25,000 or more migrant workers have arrived in the district for sugarcane harvesting and should be provided with drinking water, sanitation, mosquito nets, and other basic amenities, and factories have already been instructed to ensure compliance, he said.

The Health Department officials were also directed to inspect areas where migrant workers reside and file suo motu cases against factories that fail to provide proper basic facilities.

Emphasis has to be placed on taking preventive measures to contain the spread of infectious diseases such as dengue and organising special awareness camps to sensitise the public.

Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer K.R. Nandini, District Health and Family Welfare Officer K. Mohan, Surveillance Officer Kumar, D.V.B.D.C Officer Kantaraju, RCH Officer K.P. Ashwath, District Leprosy Eradication Officer Somasekhar, District Family Welfare Officer Bettaswamy, and other officials were present.
