The Kadapa police on Friday (October 10, 2025) have detained a notorious and habitual inter-state red sanders smuggler under the Preventive Detention (PD) Act for continuously getting involved in smuggling and allied property related offences.

The accused identified as Iragamreddy Naga Dasthagiri Reddy (36), hailing from Duvvur mandal and residing in Proddatur town of Kadapa district, was allegedly involved in red sanders smuggling since 2014. A total of 128 cases have been registered against him in Kadapa and neighbouring districts, out of which 98 cases where related to red sanders smuggling.

Dasthagiri Reddy was detained thrice under the PD Act in the past and sent to jail, but he continued to engage in smuggling after getting released, the police said.

According to the police, he maintained close nexus with inter-state smugglers of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, besides acting as the henchman of some notorious global kingpins in fetching coolies into the forest and transporting the logs.

Superintendent of Police Shelke Nachiket Vishwanath directed the Red Sanders Anti Smuggling Task Force (RSASTF) to submit a proposal to this effect to the District Collector Sridhar Cherukuri, who issued the PD Act detention orders against the accused. The orders were served on the accused through central jail authorities on Friday.
