AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, after expressing support for the resolution in the Tamil Nadu Assembly against the Karnataka government’s proposal to construct a dam at Mekedatu, later clarified that his party did not support the amended version of the resolution.

In a post on social media, Mr. Palaniswami explained that the amendment proposed by Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin was inserted into the resolution in violation of the rules of the House.

After the resolution was adopted on Friday (June 19, 2026), Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had moved an amendment to the resolution incorporating the Opposition Leader’s suggestion to urge the Centre to constitute a new tribunal on the issue.

Before the motion was amended, it should have been formally proposed and seconded before being put to a vote, Mr. Palaniswami said. However, in this instance, the prescribed procedures were not followed. His party had supported only the original resolution, not the amended motion, he said, questioning why the amendment was introduced, whom it was intended to “please,” and whom it sought to “betray.”
