Inspections began at movie theatre complexes in Kochi, Keralam, on Saturday (September 5, 2026) morning following complaints of overpricing of food items, particularly popcorn and beverages. The joint inspection being carried out by the Legal Metrology Department, Civil Supplies Department, and Food Safety Department started off at the theatre complex in Central Square Mall, Kochi.
Based on the inspection, steps have also been taken to issue notices to theatres that have not made free drinking water available at the complexes, according to officials.
The inspection follows a direction by the State government following growing complaints of overpricing of food and beverages in theatre complexes, said Santhosh N.C, deputy controller, Legal Metrology Department, Ernakulam.
“Based on our inspections, we have found that the price list is being displayed and the right quantity of food items is provided,” said Mr. Santhosh.
Food items weighed
He said the officials weighed the food items, particularly popcorn, to check whether the prescribed quantity is provided to consumers. “We observed no irregularity in the quantity provided, and the prices are also displayed as per rule. We do not have the authority to regulate the price. We will continue the inspections across all the theatre complexes in the coming days, and a report will be filed to the government based on this,” he added.
Complaints received
Ernakulam District Supplies Officer Shaji V.R. said that the department had received complaints earlier also regarding overcharging of food items in theatre complexes.
“Based on our inspection, we have found that popcorn and beverages are being priced five times more than open market rates at these theatre complexes. A litre of water being sold here costs over ₹90. These complexes must provide free drinking water as per the rule. It was not present at one of the theatre complexes we inspected. A notice will be issued against them by the concerned authority,” said Mr. Shaji.
The officials added that the inspections are being held in full swing in the district as Ernakulam has more movie multiplexes.
