Tamil Nadu has a total of 75,035 polling stations after the rationalization process, an increase of 6,568 from the earlier 68,467 stations. After the rationalization process, a total of 6,648 stations were created and 80 were merged.
While the location was changed for 2,509 polling stations, re-arrangement of sections was undertaken in 7,752, according to an official release from the Chief Electoral Officer.
As part of the revision activities, rationalisation of polling stations and formation of sections were being carried out, the release said. All 234 Electoral Registration Officers and 38 District Election Officers held meetings in this regard.
There were a set of criteria on which the polling stations were rationalized. The list of finalised polling stations received from the DEOs was sent to the Election Commission of India and it has approved the final list of polling stations, it said.
The rationalisation of polling stations was carried out to facilitate that the number of electors has been limited to 1,200 per polling station and a station was within two kilometre radius. “No polling station is located in police stations, hospitals, temples or places having religious significance.
Other factors that were considered for rationalisation was that a polling station was not located within 200 metre of any political party office and to ensure that the family members were kept in the same section and at the same place.
