More than 500 motorists were booked across Hyderabad and Cyberabad during special enforcement drives against drunk driving conducted on January 16 and January 17.
In Hyderabad city, the Traffic Police booked 305 persons for driving under the influence of alcohol. Of them, 242 were two-wheeler riders, 26 were three-wheeler drivers and 35 were driving four-wheelers and other vehicles.
In Cyberabad, a weekend special drive resulted in 231 motorists being booked. Of these, 187 were two-wheeler riders, 15 were three-wheeler drivers and 29 were driving four-wheelers.
Police reiterated that there would be zero tolerance towards drunk driving. They also warned that anyone causing a fatal accident under the influence of alcohol would be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which carries a maximum punishment of 10 years of imprisonment along with a fine.
In the previous week, from January 12 to January 17, courts disposed of 45 drunk driving cases in Cyberabad, with five offenders awarded a fine along with social service, and 40 others were imposed penalty alone.
