Minister for Civil Supplies and Irrigation N. Uttam Kumar Reddy asked authorities of the State Civil Supplies Corporation that oversees the procurement of paddy to take all precautions to protect the produce brought to the purchase centres by covering them with tarpaulin sheets so that the farming community is not subjected to any loss.

In a review meeting held here on Monday in the wake of forecast of widespread rains due to cyclone Montha in the Bay of Bengal, the Minister instructed the officials manning the procurement centres to shift/transport the paddy procured to the mills allotted without any delay.

He stated that of the 8,342 procurement centres planned to be set up for the purchase of paddy produced in the Kharif season, 4,428 were opened so far. A total of 1,80,452 tonnes of paddy worth ₹431.09 crore, including 1,06,824 tonnes of fine varieties (A Grade), was purchased from 22,433 farmers so far.

The Minister asked the District Collectors, Joint Collectors and officials of the Civil Supplies department to visit and examine the purchase centres from time to time and cautioned the authorities involved in the procurement exercise that the government would not tolerate any loss caused to the farming community due to wilful negligence.
