The Odisha government has extended the internet shutdown in Cuttack for another 24 hours, even though the situation in the city — where communal violence had erupted during the immersion processions of Durga idols — remained largely peaceful on Monday (October 6, 2025).

Officials said the extension was a precautionary measure to prevent any possible flare-up or spread of misinformation that could reignite tensions.

The Cuttack District Collector informed the Home Department that certain anti-social elements might use the Internet to circulate objectionable content or rumours aimed at inciting disaffection and disturbing communal harmony.

In its notification, the Home Department stated that the misuse of social networking sites and instant messaging services was likely to be detrimental to the peace and tranquility in Cuttack city areas.

Accordingly, all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have been directed to suspend data services — including social media and messaging platforms in the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) area, Cuttack Development Authority (CDA) area, and 42 Mauza region from 7 p.m. on Monday to 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Strict vigil maintained

Government internet and intranet-based services were kept outside the purview of the shutdown. With curfew continuing in parts of Cuttack, police maintained strict vigil on the ground and monitored online activity to prevent the spread of rumours. The 12-hour bandh called by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad could not be enforced due to curfew restrictions. Political and community leaders have appealed for peace.
