You can henceforth book an appointment with civic authorities in Bengaluru to pick up your bulky waste like old furniture, sofas, mattresses, cupboards, from your door step. This service will be free as well.
The Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML), responsible for Solid Waste Management in the city, has launched a new mobile app “DClutter”, available on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store, through which you can book for such a visit by waste collectors.
“Bulky waste such as old furniture, sofas, mattresses, cupboards, discarded clothes, broken sanitary fittings, old commodes, footwear, and other large household waste items were often not being collected through the regular waste collection system. As a result, such waste was frequently dumped along roadsides and public spaces, creating environmental concerns and affecting the cleanliness and aesthetics of the city,” Karee Gowda, CEO, BSWML, said in a statement on Saturday.
An exercise of collecting and disposing of such waste dumped by the street sides across the city, led to disposal of over 6000 tonnes of such waste, indicating the enormity of the gap in the system.
To address this, the BSWML has come out with the DClutter platform, through which citizens can conveniently request the collection of bulky waste directly from their premises. The bulky waste collection will be collected once a week, depending on the quantity and nature of the waste generated, the BSWML said.
“The collected waste will be scientifically processed through authorised recyclers wherever feasible, while the remaining non-recyclable material will be transported to Waste-to-Energy plants for further processing and disposal,” the BSWML said.
