Households across Tamil Nadu to face an immediate mandate to inspect, clean, and repair all rainwater harvesting structures as the Northeast monsoon rains have started in full measure.

According to a Government Order issued on October 16, 2026, under the renewed campaign themed ‘Implementation of Rain Water Harvesting as a Mass Movement – Renewed Initiatives’, citizens, apartment complexes, commercial establishments, and institutions are required to ensure their rooftop rainwater harvesting systems, filter chambers, recharge pits, and wells are fully functional. Residents must actively participate by maintaining rainwater harvesting mechanisms at source to improve groundwater recharge and sustain water security, the order said.

State-level and district-level coordination committees chaired by the Chief Secretary and District Collectors will monitor enforcement, while urban and rural local bodies maintain basic records of existing, rejuvenated, and newly created structures.

Tamil Nadu set guidelines for rainwater harvesting in 2002. The recent order is to counter rapid urbanisation, changing rainfall patterns, and climate variability through sustained public participation and community ownership.
