A day after the Kerala Congress (M) chairperson took exception to his ‘prodigal son’ remark, Kerala Congress leader Apu John Joseph on Sunday clarified that Jose K. Mani and his party misunderstood both the intent and context of his statement.

The Thodupuzha MLA-elect, speaking to the media, said he had drawn the phrase ‘prodigal son’ from the Bible and expressed regret if it had caused any discomfort to Mr. Mani. He added that the remark was never intended as a personal insult to anyone.

‘In cordial spirit’

He said that his statement about welcoming Kerala Congress (M) with open arms was made in all sincerity. “My comments were driven by a genuine wish that K.M. Mani’s party should not fade away. It will not be healthy for Kerala’s political system,” he said. Mr. Joseph said his comments were guided by a political sentiment, seeking the return of KC(M) to the mainstream. He stressed that his invitation was extended in a cordial spirit.

Mr. Joseph, son of Kerala Congress chairperson P.J. Joseph, had extended the invitation to KC(M) shortly after the Assembly election results were announced. However, the KC(M) took strong exception to the remarks, describing them as an attempt to insult the faction led by Mr. Jose K. Mani.
