Political opponents who hoped to destroy the unity in the DMK-led alliance have ended up in failure, DMK president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said on Sunday. He asserted that no force could divide the fraternity among the allies.

“This is not an electoral alliance based on numbers, but one formed on shared beliefs. This is an alliance formed with the objective to hold high India and Tamil Nadu,” Mr. Stalin said, while addressing the valedictory of the Communist Party of India’s (CPI) centenary celebrations in Chennai.

“The camaraderie between us goes beyond electoral politics. We stand together as democratic forces against casteism, classism, majoritarianism. It is this camaraderie that will defeat fascism, autocracy, communalism, and dictatorship,” he said.

Tearing into the BJP, Mr. Stalin said its “tentacles” were destroying everything. “The BJP-led Union government has been destroying the ideals that were protected by the country. They are destroying the ideals in the Constitution so that they would suit their interest. They are attempting to weaken the ideal of ‘Unity in Diversity’ and shift the country towards a unitary model.”

‘Narrow-minded’

Contending that the BJP was dangerous, narrow-minded and against the multi-dimensional nature of the country, Mr. Stalin said it believed that States should not have any power. “The BJP hates the ideas of secularism, socialism, equality before law, social justice, and communism. It intends to remove them not only from its rule but also from the dictionary. Our country is facing a huge crisis,” he said.

If the BJP had won 370-400 seats like it wanted to in the Lok Sabha elections, “the situation would have been worse”, he said.

“All the democratic forces in the country formed the INDIA bloc and controlled the speed of the BJP. Even without a majority, the BJP has been using its sharp nails to injure democracy. In this scenario, we need to remain vigilant and careful,” he said.

He reiterated that the upcoming Assembly election was between Tamil Nadu and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). “The BJP is riding on the back of its slaves who betrayed Tamil, the Tamil community, and Tamil Nadu,” he said.

Mr. Stalin asked why Prime Minister Narendra Modi had not mentioned the AIADMK during his recent electoral campaign. “It is because the AIADMK is not an individual party. It is a wing of the BJP. [AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K.] Palaniswami of this wing, is going about making assurances which even [Mr.] Modi did not make!” Mr. Stalin said.

The BJP had ignored Tamil Nadu in the Union Budget only because it was sure it would lose the Assembly election, Mr. Stalin added.

The alliance parties should remain united for the country’s development, Mr. Stalin said.

‘Same objective’

Pointing to the equal share of red in the DMK flag, Mr. Stalin said: “There may be minor differences in our principles and political outlook, but the aim of the Dravidian and the Communist movements are the same, which is to have an egalitarian society.”

He also recalled the words of late leader and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi that he would have become a Communist if there was no Dravidian movement.

Additionally, the Chief Minister said he would unveil a statue of political economist Karl Marx on the Connemara Public Library campus in Chennai on February 6.
