Hundreds of people witnessed the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected councillors of the Kozhikode Corporation on Sunday (December 21). District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh administered the oath to Congress councillor Manakkal Sasi, the oldest member of the council. Mr. Sasi later administered the oath to the remaining 75 councillors.

While most councillors chose a plain oath, several opted to swear in the name of their favourite gods. Paroppady councillor Hareesh Pottangadi drew attention for taking the oath in Sanskrit. The councillors signed the Corporation register and accepted bouquets from Corporation Secretary K.U. Bini. They were called to take the oath in the order of their divisions.

The LDF has 35 seats in the 76-member council, while the UDF has 28 seats, and the BJP 13 seats. Family members, party workers, and leaders turned out in large numbers to support the new councillors. The event was held at the Mohammed Abdurahiman Sahib Memorial Jubilee Hall at Tali.

M.K. Raghavan, MP, MLAs Ahammad Devarkovil and M.K. Muneer, Bharatiya Janata Party city district president K.P. Prakash Babu, District Congress Committee president K. Praveen Kumar, Communist Party of India (Marxist) district secretary M. Mehaboob, former Deputy Mayor C.P. Musafar Ahamed and Communist Party of India district secretary P. Gavas were among the dignitaries present.

The first council meeting of the elected members was held later in the day at the council hall in the Kozhikode Corporation office, chaired by Manakkal Sasi. The secretary read out the government notice regarding the election of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, scheduled to be held at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively, on December 26.

Meanwhile, the swearing-in ceremony of the members of the Kozhikode district panchayat, block panchayats and grama panchayats in the district was also held on Sunday. The District Collector administered the oath to K.P. Mohammedans, the UDF member from the Chelannur division, who in turn administered the oath to the other members. The UDF has 14 members in the 28-member panchayat council, while the LDF has 13 members and the RMP has one member.
