NDA mayoral candidate Matli Suvarna takes part in the campaign in Kadapa on Sunday.

In a significant development, the TDP-led NDA has secured the chairperson posts in six urban local bodies in Kadapa district, considered a stronghold of the YSR family, even before the elections. Candidates representing the ruling coalition have been unanimously elected to the posts.

Despite the disruption caused by the revised schedule announced by the State Election Commission (SEC) following a direction from the Supreme Court, the ruling coalition focused on securing the unanimous election of as many ward councillors and chairpersons as possible.

Gorla Madhulatha (Yerraguntla), Nandyala Raghava Reddy (Proddatur), Dhanapala Jaganmohan Raju (Mydukur), Somasila Divyateja (Badvel), Gongalireddy Swapna (Kamalapuram) and Dontham Gayatri (Rajampet) have been elected unopposed as chairpersons.

In Rajampet, 14 NDA candidates and an independent candidate were declared elected unanimously. In Pulivendula, however, YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s aunt, Y.S. Prameela, is locked in a close contest with TDP candidate T. Geetha Kumari.

Several YSRCP councillor candidates withdrew from the contest even in municipalities such as Pulivendula, Rajampet and Proddatur, where the party wielded considerable influence in the past. Rachamallu Ramadevi, wife of YSRCP State spokesperson and former MLA Rachamallu Sivaprasad Reddy, also withdrew her candidature at the last moment, citing personal reasons.

As a result, elections will be held only in the Kadapa Municipal Corporation and the Jammalamadugu and Pulivendula municipalities, as per the revised schedule.

In Kadapa, TDP zonal coordinator R. Srinivasa Reddy and MLA R. Madhavi Reddy are campaigning vigorously for mayoral candidate Matli Suvarna, promising to improve basic amenities, including drinking water supply, sanitation and public safety.
