A 65-year-old man was killed after a SUV with 500 kg red sanders wooden logs hit him on Gudiyatham Main Road at Sennanguppam village near Katpadi in Vellore on Friday.

Police said that the SUV, which had Delhi registration number plates, with two occupants in it, was proceeding towards Gudiyatham from Katpadi on the stretch when the driver, who is still absconding, lost control of the vehicle and hit the two-wheeler rider, K. Mani (65), a resident of Kavanoor village near Katpadi.

The driver stopped the vehicle after its front tyre burst. The duo in the SUV fled the spot. Based on an alert, K.V. Kuppam police reached the spot and shifted the accident victim Mani to Government Taluk Hospital in Gudiyatham where doctors said he was brought dead.

Police searched the vehicle and found 15 wooden logs of red sanders that weighed over 500 kg and worth around ₹ 20 lakh. Police informed the Forest Department to assess the nature and quality of the seized wooden logs.

A case was registered by K.V. Kuppam police. As per norms, seized red sanders were sent to the government timber unit in Tirupattur to make incense sticks. Police are analysing CCTV footage on the route and are involved in collecting details about the seized SUV and its owners to nab the suspects. A probe is underway.
