Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Satya Kumar Yadav unveiled the statue of renowned biochemist Yellapragada Subbarow during the Research Day celebrations at Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (Dr. NTRUHS) on Monday.

The programme was organised to mark the birth anniversary of the biochemist, whose work laid the foundation for several life-saving therapies and continues to influence global healthcare. He is also considered one of the greatest scientists of Indian origin.

In a press release, university Vice-Chancellor P. Chandrasekhar said that the biochemist discovered the role of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) as the primary energy currency of the cell, contributed to the development of life-saving drug Methotrexate, widely used in treatment of cancer and several autoimmune disorders, and inspired the discovery of the first broad-spectrum antibiotic, paving the way for modern antimicrobial therapy. Dr. Subbarow’s work continues to save millions of lives worldwide, he added.

Research awards recognising outstanding contributions and innovations by faculty members, postgraduate students, interns, and MBBS students were distributed during the programme. The Dr. Yellapragada Subbarow Award was presented to senior consultant and cardiothoracic surgeon and Director of Cardiovascular Surgical Research, Star Hospitals, Hyderabad, Lokeswara Rao Sajja.

In addition to Health Principal Secretary Saurabh Gaur, Director of Medical Education G. Raghunandan, A.P. State Council of Higher Education Chairman K. Madhu Murthy, Dr. NTRUHS Registrar V. Radhika Reddy, principals and vice principals from 36 colleges took part in the programme.
