Two migrant workers from Uttar Pradesh (U.P.) were arrested by Dusi police near Cheyyar town in Tiruvannamalai on Tuesday for reportedly damaging an ATM machine of a private bank in an attempt to steal cash.

Police said the arrested persons were identified as R. Sivam, 28, and L. Sushil Rajput, 30. They are residents of Kanpur Nagar in U.P. They have been employed in a local factory near Cheyyar before they were stopped from work a fortnight ago.

Initial inquiry revealed that after they stopped working in the factory, the duo was roaming in Cheyyar and Kancheepuram for nearly a fortnight. Police said the duo identified the isolated ATM near Mangal Koot Road near Dusi village. They attempted to break the locker of the machine but failed in the attempt.

Officials of the bank saw the CCTV footage that captured the incident on September 24. Subsequently, bank officials lodged a complaint with police on October 3. Special teams were formed to nab the suspects. One of the special teams identified the duo at Mangal Koot Road by their dresses that the duo wore on the day of the incident.

Police interrogated the duo and a sum of ₹2.10 lakh was recovered from them. A case was registered and further probe is under way.
