Family members of a 78-year-old farmer have complained that the farmer died as he was unable to tolerate harassment by micro-finance company executives in Kadoli village of Belagavi district.

Sateri Honnappa Rutkute was found dead on Thursday. He had taken loans of ₹12 lakh from the micro finance company based in Mannur village.

Though he repaid ₹4 lakh, the finance company demanded that he repay an additional ₹16 lakh. It also used village heralds to announce that Rutkute failed to repay loans.

The officials kept harassing the farmer’s family. They also began announcing in the village that the farmer failed to repay loans. This made him take his life, the family members complained before police officers at the Kakati Police Station.
