Meghalaya has introduced a policy positioning the northeastern State as a preferred destination for film shoots.

Under the policy, which is open to films in all languages, financial assistance of ₹1 crore will be extended to productions that shoot 75% of their content in Meghalaya. An additional ₹50 lakh will be provided if they engage local artists, musicians, and other talent.

“The policy, introduced just a few months ago, is receiving a very positive response from players in the film industry. We have been communicating with stakeholder associations across various sectors. The first eight to ten films will receive the benefits of the scheme, and depending on its success, we may consider extending it,” said Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma during a round-table with select media persons last month.

Meghalaya is also placing significant emphasis on the concert economy, with last year’s figures proving impressive. “The State Government spent ₹23.50 crore to promote the concert economy, which generated revenue of ₹133.42 crore, which translated into .a return on investment of more than fivefold,” he said.

“It contributes to our economy, creates jobs, and enhances the State’s brand. Moreover, the government doesn’t need to fund everything, as there is substantial private participation. Shillong has emerged as a major concert destination, with internationally renowned artists eager to perform here,” Mr. Sangma said.

Meghalaya benefits from having started early and developed the right ecosystem, not to mention its strong connection to Western music, which makes branding the State as a concert destination much easier. Music remains a deeply integral part of Meghalaya’s identity.

Accordingly, the Chief Minister’s Meghalaya Grassroot Music Program has been launched with an aim to promote local talent. “We launched the program because there were so many talented artists who wanted to perform but lacked platforms. The government provides them with opportunities to perform and pays them. We have a local talent pool of 7,500 artists registered under the program. Last year alone, the government spent around ₹40 crore on it,” said Mr. Sangma.
