A Maoist woman cadre, who goes by the names of Sakuntala and Pushpa, has surrendered before the Kolkata Police. Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Nand on Wednesday (June 17, 2026) said that she surrendered with one gun and 40 rounds of bullets.

“She is a native of Mechua in Belpahari, Jhargram district. She was a member of Dalma Squad’s general committee, CPI Maoist Party… She had joined 2001 as a cultural member,” Mr Nand said.

Though she belonged to Belpahari, she used to function mostly in the Jharkhand area.

The top official also added that there was a ₹10 lakh bounty on Ms. Sakuntala in Jharkhand. She has around four cases against her in West Bengal, and others in the neighbouring States.

She had joined the maoist movement at an early age when she was in class 5 and since then has been active in Odisha, Jharkhand, and Bihar. Mr Nand also added that Sakuntala has decided to leave the arms struggle and get back to normal life.

The surrendered maoist woman said that she wants to go back to normal life and urged her fellow cadres to surrender like her.

“I realised our movement is not in the right place at the moment, and it is not able to move forward, so I decided to surrender. Government has assured me that I will be able to go back to normal life and get rehabilitation,” Ms Sakuntala said.
