A 53-year-old man was arrested by Pernambut police near Gudiyatham town in Vellore on Tuesday for illegal sand mining from dry portions of Palar river.

Police said the arrested person was identified as K. Pichandi, a farmer. He is a resident of Pernambut town. Based on an alert, a special police team was patrolling Pandaravadai Koot Road near Gudiyatham town when Pichandi and N. Sekar was coming in the bullock cart with loads of river sand. The bullock cart was owned by Sekar and Pichandi was riding it when the police team intercepted them.

Police said once the duo saw the police, Sekar managed to escape from the spot while Pichandi was nabbed. A case was registered by Pernambut police. Police seized river sand, which was meant for local sale for private builders. The arrested person was lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. A probe is under way.
