Maharashtra government to issue a special notification banning non-biodegradable plastic flowers and instruct municipal corporations to take action against such markets, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated in the Legislative Council on Wednesday (March 18, 2026).

“The plastic flowers are dominating the flower market of farmers; this should not happen, so the notification will be issued to form a new system and take action on this issue. The Municipal Corporation will be given to take action on the market vendors and decorators, who are using plastic flowers,” said Mr. Fadnavis, adding that, if possible, the details of what action will be taken will be mentioned in the notification.

Mr. Fadnavis was responding to the concerns raised by BJP MLC Sadashiv Khot around the increased use of plastic flowers, which is impacting the market of floriculture farmers.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Anil Parab suggested that a certain window should be given to the vendors using the plastic flower to comply with the notification.

Earlier, similar concerns were raised by BJP MLA Vikram Pachpute and NCP SP leader Jayant Patil in the state assembly, pointing out that it is “ruining the prospects of farmers”.
