LSGD imposes ₹9.72 crore fine for waste dumping-related violations in 2025

The Local Self-Governments department (LSGD) imposed a total fine of ₹9.72 crore in 2025 for various violations related to waste dumping. Out of this, as much as ₹5.34 crore was collected for littering and dumping waste in public spaces, while a total amount of ₹1.60 crore was imposed as fine for not keeping the surroundings of shops or commercial establishments clean.

A total fine of ₹1.02 crore was imposed for the use of banned plastic products, especially in commercial establishments. For discharging sewage into public places or waterbodies, a total fine of ₹1.03 crore was imposed. Failure to remit the user fee for waste collection by Haritha Karma Sena volunteers has attracted a total fine of ₹12.59 lakh. For illegal transportation of septage waste, a total fine of ₹4.86 lakh was imposed.

In a measure aimed at encouraging the public to report instances of waste dumping to the authorities, the department had introduced a reward scheme for those who report such cases with evidence. More complaints are being received on the WhatsApp number 9446700800. A special control room has been set up in the Principal Directorate of the LSGD to monitor this properly and take action.

Individuals and institutions face a fine up to ₹5,000 for dumping or burning waste. Those who discharge sewage into public places or waterbodies are liable to a fine of ₹5,000 to ₹50,000. Dumping waste into waterbodies is an offence punishable by a fine of ₹10,000 to ₹50,000 and imprisonment of six months to one year. The penalty for selling banned plastic is a fine of ₹10,000 to ₹50,000. Illegal transportation of waste or septage in vehicles will result in action including confiscation of the vehicle.
