Lloyd’s List Intelligence, a maritime data and intelligence company that provides information and analytics for the shipping industry, has opened its center of excellence in Chennai. The office in DLF Cybercity, Chennai, was inaugurated on October 15. Waqas Samad, CEO of the company, said the Chennai office currently employs some 30 people and the staff count will cross 200 in another year and half.

Lloyd’s List is among the oldest publications in the world with a history of nearly 300 years. While Lloyd’s List is a well-known publication for maritime professionals, Lloyd’s List Intelligence offers several data and analytics products used by some 60,000 shipping professionals across the world.

The office in Chennai will leverage the growing importance of the Asia-Pacific region in shipping, the abundance of tech and data talent in Chennai, as well as the region’s maritime legacy, said Mr. Samad, citing the support by the Government of Tamil Nadu with which the company had signed a Memorandum of Understanding.

Mr. Samad said that AI and ML play a key role in analysing the 600 to 700 million datapoints monitored by Lloyd’s List Intelligence every day to provide business information regarding global trade and maritime logistics trends. “The tools tell shipping professionals what is happening, who owns the merchant ships in service, what cargo is carried, where it’s going and so on,” he added.
