Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said here on Friday (December 5) that the second term of the Left rule in the State had resulted in progress across various sectors.

Kerala has set a model in decentralisation of power by empowering local bodies, he said at the public meeting organised as part of the Left Democratic Front’s campaign for the local body polls in Kaloor.

He claimed that the State was facing a crisis in various sectors at the end of the United Democratic Front’s tenure in 2016. Public health and general education sectors were in deep crisis. The Left government could rejuvenate ailing sectors through various initiatives during its first term, he said.

He added that people had voted the Left front back to power in 2021 in recognition of the delivery of promises made in the first term. The government was able to fulfill 580 of around 600 promises made at the end of the first term, he said.

The Chief Minister said that the State had achieved considerable progress in the higher education sector in the past five years. The government ensured the allocation of required funds to ensure progress in the sector. The signs of change were visible as three State-funded public universities — Kerala University, Cochin University of Science and Technology, and Mahatma Gandhi University — had figured among the top 12 such institutions in national rankings, he said.

Mr. Vijayan said the government was also able to turn the State into an investment-friendly destination. It was achieved through proper assessment of gaps and amendments to norms that had posed hurdles to investors, he said.

He claimed that the Left rule in the Kochi Corporation over the past five years could ensure progress in various sectors. The waste management issue at Brahmapuram was solved. The construction of the compressed biogas plant at the site is in the final stages, he said.

Ministers P. Rajeeve and Kadannappally Ramachandran, Mayor M. Anilkumar, and CPI(M) district secretary S. Sathish were among those who were present.
