Lucknow police on Wednesday (December 10, 2025) arrested former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Amitabh Thakur for allegedly abusing his position as Superintendent of Police (SP), Deoria, in 1999 to fraudulently secure an industrial plot in the name of his wife through fabricated documents. Mr. Thakur, who was arrested by the Lucknow police around 2 a.m. on Wednesday at Shahjahanpur Junction while he was on his way to New Delhi via Lucknow by train was produced before a court in Deoria on December 10, remanded to 14 days of judicial custody.

“A case had been registered against former IPS officer Amitabh Thakur at Deoria Sadar Kotwali under Crime No. 1021/25, under Sections 419, 420, 467, 468, 34, and 120B of the IPC for fraudulently securing plot in the name of his wife. He was detained from Shahjahanpur junction and later produced in the court in Deoria,” said a police official. Mr. Thakur was brought under heavy security to Deoria and medically examined before being produced in the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court. While being produced in the court, the former IPS, who also is an activist alleged that his murder can be plotted by those in power as he continuously highlights wrongdoings and corruption in the government system.
