HYDERABAD

Working president of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) K.T. Rama Rao has said that no individual, even if he/she is holding a highest position, is above the Constitution of the country and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar is no exception.

In a statement, he said on Friday that nobody in the country is invested with powers to snatch the right of franchise of any citizen of the country and individuals are not above the institutions in any circumstances. He demanded that the CEC quit without any fuss immediately to keep the sanctity of the Election Commission of India (ECI) intact after his decisions led to deletion of nearly 13.5 crore voters’ names from the electoral rolls across the country.

He observed that the CEC was not greater than the fundamental rights of the 140 crore people of the country, but the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise taken at the behest of the CEC has led to many irregularities in the electoral rolls. He requested the Supreme Court to take the matter suo motu and order an inquiry with a sitting judge.

Meanwhile, party senior leader T. Harish Rao too demanded the CEC’s resignation for his failure to maintain the sanctity of the ECI and confidence of the people in the institution. The ECI should be the backbone of democracy and not as a protective gear to those in power, he said.

He said the CEC must own the responsibility for all the fiasco in SIR, and if he is allowed to continue in the post, it would be a great threat to democracy in the country.
