Krishna Gana Sabha on Saturday honoured senior theatre artiste, director and writer ‘Appa’ Ramesh, who has given over 7,500 stage appearances, with the Nataka Choodamani Award. It also conferred the Iyakkunar Sigaram K. Balachander Award on theatre actor and historian Karthik Bhatt with 400 stage appearances. The awards were presented during the inauguration of the Sabha’s Summer Theatre Fest that will feature nine plays during the weekends till May 24.

Actor and former Member Secretary, Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Mandram, Sachu, appreciated the fact that amateurs were the ones who were shining in the firmament of Tamil theatre. “There used to be a time when plays would be made into films and actors would move from theatre to cinema. I don’t see that happening now. We used to think amateurs were not serious about acting and theatre. But that is not so. They are the ones who are standing strong now,” she said.
