The University of Calicut is planning to launch a special mission to enhance the academic and administrative standards of its affiliated colleges spread across five districts in Kerala.
According to university officials, the project named ASCENT or Advancing Standards for College Empowerment and Transformation is aimed at fortifying the network of 445 colleges affiliated with the institution. They say the effort will be to fully realise the university’s founding vision as a premier centre of higher learning in the Malabar region as it approaches the diamond jubilee year in 2028. The university authorities claim that the mission is poised to drive inclusive growth, strengthen industry linkages, and sustain continuous improvement, thereby cultivating a dynamic and future-ready academic community.
A blue print for the project submitted by pro Vice-Chancellor P. Rasheed Ahammed was recently approved by Vice-Chancellor P. Raveendran. It will be implemented by the college development council of the university. Council director N. Mohammedali has been asked to prepare a detailed project report (DPR). The DPR will be presented before the Syndicate for its approval.
Primary objective
The initiative will focus on digitising the existing administrative frameworks in phases to facilitate streamlined and accessible service delivery for the affiliated institutions. The proposed mission is designed to establish a robust structural alignment between the university and the colleges. The officials claim that its primary objective is to cultivate academic excellence, administrative efficiency, and holistic institutional development through collaborative initiatives.
These structured endeavours will encompass faculty development programmes, strategic research partnerships, and quality enhancement steps aligned with the National Assessment and Accreditation Council and National Institutional Ranking Framework guidelines. It will also prioritise student skill-building, placement facilitation, and the implementation of data-driven governance structures.
Rating system
A rating system will be launched to improve the academic quality of affiliated colleges. Special training will be provided for the colleges to attain this goal. Special packages could be planned for colleges that are found to be lacking in academic quality.
The project will actively foster the establishment of innovation clubs, optimise resource sharing, and implement structured grievance redressal mechanisms alongside comprehensive capacity-building programmes. These strategic efforts will empower affiliated colleges to attain elevated academic standards and adapt to emerging paradigms within the higher education sector, the officials claim. Consequently, this institutional transformation will allow colleges to significantly contribute to the broader higher education ecosystem of Kerala, they point out.
