At least one person had a narrow escape when a tree in front of Press Club near Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, keeled over on Saturday (May 30, 2025) morning.

According to eyewitness Sasi, a security person at the Press Club, the woman on an electric scooter was passing that way when the tree standing on the pavement keeled over and fell across the road towards the Press Club canteen, missing her narrowly. The woman, who braked immediately, sustained minor injuries in the impact. The front of her scooter was slightly damaged.

The Fire and Rescue Services said they received a call about the tree keeling over around 9.35 a.m. Two other persons sustained minor injuries in the incident and were taken to General Hospital in an ambulance, they said.

A fire force team from Chenkalchoola cut the tree and branches. The plan was to load these onto a Corporation vehicle for carting the tree segments away, fire force personnel said.

A motorbike parked under the tree sustained minor damage when the tree fell.

A major accident was averted as not many vehicles were on the road.

The city has been receiving intermittent rains for the past few days. Cutting down of tree branches posing a threat to lives has been under way.
