The Kerala government has issued orders increasing the monthly assistance given to caregivers of chronically bedridden, disabled persons or persons with other terminal or chronic illnesses or the elderly, under Ashwasakiranam scheme, from ₹600 to ₹1,000 with immediate effect.

The enhancement of assistance for caregivers under the Ashwasakiranam scheme by ₹400 was officially announced in the 2026-27 State Budget. The Executive Director of Kerala Social Security Mission had written to the government last month, requesting that the said decision be implemented

The scheme had originally been introduced in 2011 and the amount was fixed at ₹600 in 2016. It is thus after a decade that a hike of ₹400 is being introduced.
