Two junior doctors at Government District Hospital in Palakkad, Kerala, have been suspended by the Health department over allegations of medical negligence leading to a nine-year-old girl’s hand amputation.
The girl, Vinodini from Pallassana, was initially treated at the hospital for a hand fracture on September 24, but her condition worsened, leading to amputation at Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode. The incident sparked a controversy and the girl’s parents alleged medical negligence by the doctors at District Hospital.
Those suspended were Mustafa, a junior resident, and Sarfaraz, a junior consultant. Health authorities said they were suspended pending inquiry.
Authorities deny medical negligence
District Hospital Superintendent P.K. Jayasree and District Medical Officer (DMO) T.V. Rosh had defended the doctors and denied medical negligence. Instead, they blamed the parents for not bringing the child back to the hospital promptly after she complained of acute pain.
Dr. Jayasree and Dr. Rosh had said Vinodini’s hand could have been saved if she had been promptly brought back to the hospital after her condition worsened following plastering for the fracture at the District Hospital.
Kerala Government Medical Officers Association (KGMOA) too defended the doctors and denied allegations of medical negligence.
Vinodini’s condition remained critical on Monday. Her parents said they would move against the doctors legally.
