A group of alleged Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]-Centre of Indian Trade Unions activists attacked a campaign team of the United Democratic Front (UDF) Trikaripur constituency candidate Sandeep Warrier at the Cheruvathur bus stand on Wednesday (April 1, 2026) morning and blocked Mr. Warrier who reached the spot upon hearing about the incident.

The incident occurred around 9.30 a.m. when a five-member foot campaign team reached the bus stand. The team holding promotional material was reportedly intercepted by a group led by Krishnan, a CPI(M) worker, along with headload workers affiliated to the CITU. According to UDF sources, the group stopped the campaigners and attempted to manhandle them and destroy campaign materials. They also allegedly threatened Narshad Ilambadi who was leading the campaign.

Warrier protests

Mr. Warrier, who rushed to the spot upon receiving information on the incident, was also reportedly prevented from entering the area. He publicly protested against the attack. Following the intervention of local people, the attackers allegedly backed off and the situation was brought under control.

Condemning the incident, Mr. Warrier said that in a democratic country, every candidate and political worker had the right to campaign and seek votes and urged the CPI(M) workers to recognise and respect these democratic rights. Mr. Warrier then continued his campaign, visiting the Cheruvathur town and boarding buses to canvass votes.

CPI(M) releases video

Meanwhile, the CPI(M) on Wednesday released a video seeking to counter allegations that UDF workers were obstructed during the election campaign in Trikaripur.

The video reportedly recorded during a campaign at Madakkara in Cheruvathur purportedly shows the presence of individuals from outside the State participating in campaign activities.
