Responding to the call by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to follow austerity measures, Karnataka’s Leader of Opposition R. Ashok on May 13 announced that he and his family would abide by austerity measures.

It is learnt that Mr. Ashok has decided to reduce the use of escort vehicles, and also travel by Namma Metro whenever he is travelling to any area which is on the metro route.

“I am reducing the use of escort vehicles. My entire family will also practice austerity. Since there is no sign of the ongoing war (in West Asia) ending, it is appropriate to take precautionary measures,” he said.

He urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to direct government officials to travel by bus, and practice austerity measures.

“In times of war, the Congress leaders in Karnataka should not indulge in petty politics over the question of abiding by austerity measures, acting at the behest of their leader Rahul Gandhi,” he said.
