The Shivamogga police on Wednesday shot at a rowdy sheeter wanted in a murder case before arresting him on the outskirts of Shivamogga.
Akbar, 22, was one of the accused in the murder of Amzad, 34, an incident reported on October 5. Amzad was assaulted by a group of persons at RML Nagar in the city on October 2, and he succumbed to injuries three days later. Doddapete police had arrested five persons in connection with the murder. However, Akbar, also an accused in the case, had been absconding.
Shivamogga Superintendent of Police G.K. Mithun Kumar told presspersons on Wednesday that Shivamogga Rural police sub-inspector Manjunath and his staff had been searching for Akbar. The team received information that he had been hiding in a place and rushed to arrest him, Mr. Kumar said. “The accused tried to escape after assaulting Chandra Naik, a police staff member. Mr. Manjunath opened fire initially and asked the accused to surrender. As he did not budge, the police official shot at his left leg and took him into custody,” he added.
Akbar has been accused of grievous crimes, including attempt to murder and extortion. He was taken to a hospital for treatment. Mr. Naik, who suffered injuries, was also under treatment, the Superintendent of Police added.
