Kannur varsity presents ₹373.81-crore Budget with focus on innovation, student welfare

Kannur University on Thursday presented its ₹373.81-crore Budget for the 2026-27 financial year, with a strong thrust on innovation centres for nurturing entrepreneurship, strengthening academic research activities, digital transformation, and students welfare measure.

The Budget tabled by finance standing committee convener Dr. Sajith P.K. projected an expenditure of ₹366.80 crore and a closing surplus of ₹7.01 crore. The versity expects ₹47.76 crore from the State government under the Plan head, based on which various development and academic initiatives have been proposed.

A key highlight of the Budget is the launch of an innovative concept titled Freedom Square in collaboration with the Kerala Startup Mission, aimed at nurturing entrepreneurship and creativity among students through joint innovation centres.

To strengthen academic and research activities, the varsity will provide financial assistance for research projects assessing the cultural contributions of north Malabar. A centre for foreign languages will also be established to help students acquire foreign language proficiency.

The Budget proposes a novel programme offering training in geriatric care to instil values and emotional bonding among students. The existing merit-cum-means scholarship will be extended to students of affiliated colleges as well.

An allocation of ₹50 lakh has been made for setting up an IBM centre of excellence for intensive skilling and research activities to enhance research capabilities. Separate funds have also been set aside for innovative and entrepreneurial initiatives and academic student support schemes.

In a push towards digital learning, smart classrooms will be established across campuses. An allocation of ₹20 lakh has been made for launching K-Suite software, while another ₹20 lakh has been earmarked for implementing DCB software to efficiently track and manage the varsity’s various revenue streams.

The varsity has set aside ₹61.5 lakh for the university union. To ensure timely conduct and evaluation of examinations, ₹12.44 crore has been allocated.

Student welfare measures include ₹4 lakh for the welfare of differently abled students and ₹10 lakh for organising science and humanities festival.
