K. Balakrishnan, former owner and chief editor of Express, a former Thrissur-based Malayalam daily, passed away in the district at the age of 87. A prominent figure in Kerala’s media landscape, he played a key role in shaping the identity and influence of the newspaper over several decades.

Founded in 1944 by his father K. Krishnan, Express became a respected publication under Balakrishnan’s leadership. He began his journalistic career as a film critic under the pen name “Balaji” and took over as chief editor in November, 1970, following his father’s demise.

Beyond journalism, he was associated with several institutions, serving as a director of Dhanalakshmi Bank and Ambal Chitties. He also led Natananikethan, a cultural institution founded by his father to promote dance training.

Balakrishnan stepped down from editorial responsibilities in 1993 after Express was taken over by Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy.

His mortal remains were be kept for public homage at his residence on Shornur Road, Thrissur, before cremation at the Poonkunnam Brahmasabha crematorium on Thursday.

He is survived by his wife, Chandra, children, Krishnan and Vidya.
