Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) Chairman P.M. Narendra Swamy on Sunday said that there is a proposal to form a joint team to inspect and monitor Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) in Bengaluru.

Speaking to reporters he said that about 90% of the STP’s in the State and in particular in Bengaluru are not functioning properly.

He said that though KSPCB has been conducting inspections and imposing fines on the erring high rise buildings and apartment complexes in Bengaluru many are not complying with the rules.

“In order to address this issue we are making a proposal to form a joint team which will regularly inspect and monitor STP in Bengaluru. This joint team will comprise officials from our Board and also from the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) who will jointly work together and do periodic monitoring once in three months to ensure that STPs are functional in high rise buildings and apartment complexes in Bengaluru,” Mr. Narendra Swamy said.

He also said that there was a shortage of staff, especially technical staff in the board which was making it difficult to monitor STP’s.

He said that enrollment would soon be done to ensure that the vacancies are filled.

Golden jubilee celebrations

The KSPCB is celebrating its golden jubilee across the State on the occasion of completing 50 years. A grand closing ceremony will be held in Bengaluru on November 18 and 19. Mr. Narendra Swamy said that a symposium based on the theme ‘Circular Economy and Sustainability’ is being organised as part of the celebration.

The Indira Priyadarshini Award will also be given to five achievers who have worked for environmental protection and pollution control on the occasion,

“Controlling pollution is not possible without involving the youth. Hence, a competition has been organised for the youth to make reels on environmental awareness. A cash prize of ₹50,000 has been announced for the best reel related to environmental protection and ₹25,000 has been announced for the second prize and ₹10,000 for the third prize,” he said.
