Forest officials rescued a 750-kilogram female Indian Gaur (Bos gaurus) trapped in a wire snare laid by hunters in the Eco-Sensitive Zone of Papikonda National Park (PNP) in Polavaram district of Andhra Pradesh.

Forest officials found the trapped gaur while patrolling in the Indukuru reserve forest of Rampachodavaram Forest Division on September 10 and initiated the rescue operation.

Led by Rampachodavaram Divisional Forest Officer Shivakumar Gangal, a team of forest officials and veterinarians rescued the Indian Gaur.

“The rescued Indian Gaur has been sent to the Animal Rescue Centre in Visakhapatnam after administering initial treatment for advanced veterinary care, rehabilitation and speedy recovery from the injuries,” said Mr. Gangal.

The official said on Saturday that the animal was responding to treatment and showing signs of recovery in the Visakhapatnam ARC. The Papikonda Hill Range in the Godavari Valley was earlier known as ‘Bison Hills’, where Indian Gaur thrive.
