Senior members of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Telangana took part in a national scientific workshop on suicide prevention held in Jodhpur on Saturday, as part of a mental-health convention. The session brought together psychiatrists and clinicians who discussed counselling methods, diagnostic evaluation and recent advances in treatment for those at risk of suicide.

President of IMA Telangana P. Kishan spoke on counselling strategies and psychosocial interventions, stressing early identification of distress, strong support systems and clear communication for those with suicidal thoughts.

General Secretary of the Indian Psychiatric Society for South Zone States George Reddy outlined diagnostic practices that support early detection, including risk assessment, recognition of behavioural warning signs and mental-status examination.

National Council member of the Indian Psychiatric Society Vishal Akula focused on the medical aspect of suicide management. He said that reduced serotonin and dopamine levels can contribute to depression and suicidal ideation, and discussed the role of modern psychotropic medication, emergency interventions and ongoing research in shaping current treatment approaches.
