The Hyderabad Traffic Police booked 304 motorists for using unauthorised sirens and multi-tone horns on two-wheelers and four-wheelers during a special enforcement drive launched across the city on October 12.

According to a press note issued on Saturday, the police booked 182 violations involving unauthorised sirens and another 122 cases involving multi-tone horns.

The drive was undertaken to curb the use of prohibited horns and sirens, which contribute to noise pollution and can mislead other road users into believing that private vehicles are emergency vehicles.

Under Rule 119(2) of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, the use of such horns and sirens is prohibited except on authorised emergency vehicles. Violators face a fine of ₹1,000 under the provisions cited by the traffic police.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), D. Joel Davis, said the department was following a zero-tolerance policy towards such violations, pointing out that unauthorised sirens could disrupt traffic movement and delay genuine emergency vehicles, including ambulances and fire engines. The police said similar enforcement drives would be conducted regularly across Hyderabad to ensure compliance with traffic regulations.

Motorists have been advised against installing or using unauthorised sirens and multi-tone horns and urged to cooperate with enforcement personnel.
