With mangoes flooding city markets this summer, Hyderabad police have issued a caution to the public against the sale and consumption of artificially ripened fruits, warning of potential health risks.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar said that a few traders are using chemicals such as calcium carbide to ripen mangoes prematurely, giving them an attractive golden appearance before selling them in markets and on roadside carts. Naturally ripened fruits, they noted, do not have a uniform colour, unlike chemically treated ones that often appear yellowish-green on the outside while remaining unripe inside.
Medical experts have cautioned that consumption of such fruits can lead to throat irritation, stomach upset, vomiting and diarrhoea. Long-term exposure may also pose risk to the nervous system and respiratory health.
The Hyderabad Police said that the enforcement teams are monitoring the sale of adulterated mangoes through the H-Fast mechanism and are taking legal action against traders found violating food safety norms.
Citizens have been advised to remain cautious while purchasing mangoes and avoid fruits with unnatural colour, chemical odour or unusual taste. Police also warned against consuming fruits that show abnormal changes, including discolouration when washed.
The public has been urged to report information regarding adulterated mangoes to the police by dialling 100 or contacting the H-Fast helpline at 8712661212.
