In a move to strengthen enforcement against food safety violations, the city police on Monday (February 16, 2026) appointed an inspector-rank officer to head its newly formed Anti-Food Adulteration Team.

N. Ranjith Kumar Goud, currently serving as Inspector with the Task Force in the Khairatabad zone, has been posted as the first inspector of the specialised unit.

The team will function under the supervision of a Deputy Commissioner of Police. His posting comes as part of a recent administrative reshuffle in which the Hyderabad police transferred 63 inspectors across various departments.

Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar conceptualised the wing following a spate of complaints about widespread adulteration of essential food items, including milk, ginger garlic paste, tea powder among others, across the city.

Speaking to The Hindu, the official said that coordination meetings are currently underway with the Food Safety Authority and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation to streamline inspections and enforcement mechanisms. Additional personnel, including constables rank officials will also be appointed shortly.

The newly-constituted team will focus on gathering intelligence on adulteration networks, conducting joint inspections with relevant agencies, and ensuring follow-up legal action against offenders.
